The Asian Games in Nagoya and Aichi Prefecture have been marred by a series of logistical blunders, drawing sharp criticism. Participants and observers alike have voiced their discontent. Organisers struggled with complaints about accommodation shortages, transport mishaps, and errors in ceremonial protocols.

Japan, usually lauded for its meticulous event management, encountered unexpected hurdles during the Games. A decision to skip the traditional athletes' village in favor of hotels and container-style accommodations proved problematic. The participant count surged from an expected 15,000 to 17,000. This unforeseen increase led to a frantic search for additional space, including the use of an Italian cruise ship with 1,500 cabins.

Transport issues added to the chaos. Athletes were taken to incorrect venues, causing delays and frustration. Diplomatic missteps further tainted the event. The North Korean anthem mistakenly played for the South Korean men's hockey team. The South Korean flag was improperly raised during a football medal ceremony. These incidents added to the diplomatic troubles.

Takaaki Omi, deputy director general of the Games, acknowledged the difficulties. He noted the scale of the event, which exceeded the Paris Olympics in participant numbers, brought unexpected challenges. He stressed that they took feedback seriously and made improvements as issues arose.

The Japanese subsidiary of France's GL Events, responsible for managing venue operations, faced criticism. The company, with a 63 billion yen contract, was accused by local media of cutting corners and using inadequately trained staff. This situation arose after Dentsu Group, a seasoned player in Japan’s sporting event management, was sidelined due to a bid-rigging scandal.

Professor Kozo Tomiyama of Osaka University suggested the problems stemmed from the wide scope of responsibility given to GL Events, rather than a lack of experience. He urged for a review of the criteria used to assess the contractor's capabilities and the supervision provided after the contract award.

Despite these setbacks, Husain al-Musallam, director general of the Olympic Council of Asia, pointed to the 54 new world records set during the Games as evidence of success. He praised the environment created for athletes, asserting that such achievements were only possible with adequate facilities and support.

Yet, the issues have persisted into the ongoing Para Games, with further anthem mix-ups reported. Nagoya Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa, also the deputy head of the Games organising committee, called the errors "unacceptable" and issued apologies.

As the dust settles, the focus turns to learning from these experiences to ensure future events meet Japan's high standards. Professor Tomiyama expressed hope that organisers will take these lessons to heart to deliver higher-quality sporting events in the future.
